EMA Enterprises, based in Kalamazoo, Michigan is owned and operated by Mike Leeuw. This multi-faceted food service company, established in 2006, employs over 100 people. Currently, EMA owns and operates 6 restaurants in Mattawan, Kalamazoo, Portage, Vicksburg (Michelle's), and Richland (Liz's) as well as EMA Catering. The catering division of the company offers full-service catering for Banquets, Weddings and Special Events and can provide banquet rooms and special dining options at their restaurants. The company is also contracted to provide concessions for all Western Michigan University athletic events, dining services at Palisades Nuclear Plant and American Axle Manufacturing.
"The personal service we have received from our banker, Marcus Kole and the entire staff at FNBM has been incredible," stated Leeuw. "This past year has been one of our most difficult ones as a business and we could always count on First National Bank of Michigan to be there as our support system. Marcus was outstanding in assisting us with all our banking needs during the pandemic."
Since the restaurant and catering businesses are all about customer service, Leeuw appreciates receiving good service. According to Leeuw, "We have banked at other institutions but there is no comparison with the level of customer service we received at First National Bank of Michigan. And, at the end of the day, we feel that is what matters the most. We always felt they put our needs first."
EMA adjusted in 2020, offering online ordering and increasing safety protocols for their employees and customers while continuing to provide quality food and exceptional service. "The pandemic year proved to be our most challenging in the last 15 years in the restaurant business," said Leeuw. "FNBM, namely, Marcus, was there for us as we navigated the Payroll Protection Program. The service he provided was exceptional and he had a way of making us feel like we were his only customer when we knew he was extremely busy with others. We never hesitated to call him with questions and advice, as this was such new territory, and he always came through with the answers. Never once did he make us feel as though he was too busy to take our calls. This kind of service during a crisis was very much appreciated."
